Can we adopt tsunami orphans?
BY ROBIN HILBORN, Family Helper editor | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
(Jan. 10, 2005) Is it possible to adopt children orphaned by the Asian tsunami disaster? Various levels of government have responded to the public's question. The basic response is, "Accepted international practice is to try to find a home for orphaned children in their own country before uprooting them to a foreign country and culture." See the ACC article Government stance on helping tsunami orphans for advice on how Canadians can best help the children in need. The Adoption Council of Canada has a position on adopting tsunami orphans. ACC says that the countries involved first would have to try all the possibilities of caring for orphans within their borders. Only then could Canadians apply to adopt.
