"Beginner's Guide to Adoption": yours for the asking
BY ROBIN HILBORN, Family Helper editor | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
(Dec. 17, 2004) If you're thinking about adoption, a 32-page guide to the process could help you. It's called "A Child is Waiting ... A Beginner's Guide to Adoption". The Guide contains a step-by-step description of the process of adoption plus various resources to help answer your basic questions. "Beginner's Guide" comes in a U.S. version -- over 100,000 copies distributed since January 2002 -- and a Canadian version, launched in December 2004. Both are published by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The Canadian edition was coordinated by Nancy Umbach, Program Officer for the Adoption Council of Canada.
Here are some of the topics covered: To get a free copy of this guide, call 1-800-275-3832 and leave a message requesting "A Beginner's Guide to Adoption". You automatically get the Canadian version when you give a Canadian address. If requesting more than one copy, state the number of copies you'd like. You can also download a PDF file of the U.S. version from www.davethomasfoundation.org/html/resource/Beginners_Guide.pdf. Canadians interested in domestic adoption should consult Canada's only national photolisting web site, "Canada's Waiting Kids", www.canadaswaitingkids.ca, run by the Adoption Council of Canada. It shows photos and profiles of children in care of Canadian child welfare agencies and waiting for permanent adoptive families in Canada.
