Thorncrest hosts canoe and kayak race on Sunday
Southampton, Ont., Aug. 11, 2008 -- As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, Thorncrest Outfitters will be hosting a Canoe and Kayak Race on the Saugeen River, Sunday, Aug. 17. There are both river and land races, with registration at 1 p.m. at the Chesley Street boat launch.
You can bring your own canoe or tandem kayak, or use a Thorncrest boat at no charge.
Get the young ones involved in the Family Race for ages five and up: just follow the obstacle course in the river and collect trail tape at designated locations. (Paddlers 18 and under must have an adult sign for them in order to race.)
A teen canoe/tandem kayak race will pit 15-18 year olds against each other (at least two paddlers per boat). Or try the single kayak race for 15-18 and 18+; first one back wins.
On land Thorncrest plans a canoe portage race for 15-18 and 18+, and a throw bag toss between two partners, ages 15 and up.
Prizes go to the best decorated canoe or kayak, the best people costume and the best animal costume.
